Freak Out!

Ummmmmm.... Hi?

Been awhile... Yeah...

Ok excuses:

I thought the internet was down!

My dog ripped the router out of the wall!

I tripped and took out all the wiring in the entire house including the ones responsible for the internet!

Ummmmm.... I'm out.

Really though, it's been a while (awhile? Not sure which is right. If you know, please correct me. I'm apparently too lazy to use Google.) I've been doing some extra stuff at work and I'm going back to school next semester and I've been less than talkative in real life lately which all translates to me being very untalkative on the internet. But I'm about to make up for that.

Prepare for the melodramatic rant in 3...2...1...

YOU GUYS!!! Wine and Dine is THIS SATURDAY! As in 4 sleeps from now. And I'm. Freaking. Out. I missed soe long runs and they ones that I got in were pretty slow. My biggest concern: getting swept. Realistically, I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm in corral J so I have a bit of a buffer and the adrenaline of the whole experience will probably help as well.

I've also gotten some wisdom from Frankfurt: 1. Hydrate. 2. Pace thyself (his words not mine) and 3. Have fun. Thank you Frankfurt!

BUT I'M STILL FREAKING OUT!!! HELP ME!!!

Ok, dramatics out of the way now. I have A LOT to tell you guys. 5 race recaps, mostly, plus a tale of fat feet and a near death experience. And maybe some more dramatics. But what is life without a little drama? Calmer, I suppose. But perhaps not as much fun.

Question of the day: Were you nervous before your first half? Also, HELP ME! Words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I'm Alive!

So... Been awhile. Totally my fault, no excuses. But if there were excuses they would be as follows.

1. I haven't been working out much the last few weeks for several reasons (my excuses have sub-excuses, that makes me fancy, right?) First, a couple of my friends at work quit to go work in their preferred field and while I'm very happy for them it makes me sad cause they're leaving me! So I was a bit depressed about that and just wanted to wallow. Second, my parents went out of town and left me with the house all to myself so I decided I would rather sit in the recliner and watch TV than go to the gym. Lame, I know.

2. I was mentally preparing for Wine and Dine training to begin! And begin it did! I did great the first half of the week and then I dropped a table on my foot so I missed my second 30 minutes run and my long run. It was just a crazy bruise, but my foot seems to be completely better now so I am ready to tackle week two!

And that's the end of the excuses. Which weren't really excuses because there are no excuses for my absence.

Moving on, Princess registration opens this week! Who's in? Me, for one. Also Pattserella and Shelila because I forced them to sign up for the 5k with me. Hooray for peer pressure!

Who's doing Princess Weekend this year?

Happy Friendaversary (A Month Ago)!

Happy, Happy Friendaversary, Happy, Happy Friendaversary, Happy, Happy Friendaversary to me to and
you and me and you!

That was the theme song of my weekend a few weekends ago because apparently I suck at blogging.

I met Pattserella 15 years ago. 15 years, man. Heavy.

But yeah. When we went to Disney a few weekends ago it was just for kicks. Pattserella had just gotten her
annual pass but had to deliver a wedding cake on Saturday morning so we decided to leave Saturday
afternoon and stay the night.

Coronado Springs was our resort of choice for several reasons: 1. It was the cheapest of the moderate
resorts. 2. The pool looked awesome. And 3. My old friend Ra-Shelly used to work there and her
Facebook updates always made me jealous of her awesome job.

One thing about Coronado Springs: It’s kind of spread out, so if you’re looking for a quick point A to
point B place this may not be the resort for you. Also, we stayed in a Rancho which was huge and kind of
maze like. I kept getting lost on my way to the room. But I might be am directionally challenged so that might be the issue.

We didn’t even decide to make it our Friendaversary until we went to the pool on Saturday evening.

I was being melodramatic and shouted “15 years, man! 15 years of friendship and this is how I get
treated!” after I got splashed. And thus, our Friendaversary began.

First stop: the ticket window to get Pattserella’s pass and to get Happy Anniversary buttons. Which we
wore around the park. When Pattserella went through bag check, the security guy was like “Who’s the lucky guy?” and she had to say, “Oh, it’s my friend Sarah. It’s our Friendaversary.” So people thought we were lesbians all night. It was kind of funny.

We got to ride Space Mountain twice and Splash Mountain twice (which is awesome in the dark by the
way. What is it with me and rides in the dark?). We actually hit pretty much every ride we wanted to in
just 5 or 6 hours that we were there. We didn’t ride Pirates of the Caribbean mostly because it broke
while we were in line and I didn’t feel like waiting. No Haunted Mansion either because we didn’t walk
that way.

We did witness a woman on Space Mountain at 12:20 am yelling at one of the cast members for not
letting them go on the fast pass side when they didn’t have fast passes. Rude. Hella rude. He eventually
just let her go but I wanted to apologize to him for her behavior cause that was pretty much the rudest
thing I have ever seen. People suck.

Day two was Epcot. We wanted to be out the door by 2 so we hit what we could and mostly just wandered around the World Showcase. And got the cinnamon glazed almonds that I love! And it didn't rain, so automatically a win over my last trip to Epoct.

The takeaway of all this? If you have a friend you've been friends with for a super long time, have a friendaversary, just be prepared for people to assume you're a lesbian. Also, write blog posts right after the event rather than a month later so that you can remember most of the details.

Have you ever celebrated a friendaversary?

Week In Review

Hey hey hey! Happy Father's Day! I just got back from taking my father out for a steak dinner and it was yum-tastic! We all know how much I love food.

Also, I might actually do a post or two this week that aren't a weekly review! What the fudge!? Does that actually happen?

On to the weekly review!

Sunday: Rest Day

Monday: Unexpected Rest Day (headache :()

Tuesday: 1 mile treadmill with Samatha plus half of the 30 minute circuit

Wednesday: I built a house!

Thursday: Rest Day (cause building a house is hard)

Friday: Rest Day

Saturday: Swim Party!

Only one day of running. But I built a house! That's kind of a big deal! Habijax was doing their annual Blitz where they build 25 houses in a week and I helped! Our company is pretty big on community relations so they let about 30 people go and help out. We did siding, and not to sound to egotistical, but we were awesome! Our HR guy was on our team and had to tell me and my friend K. Ward to play nice with each other and we had to explain to him that snarking at each other is how we love.

And yesterday was swim party at Pattserella's house! For about 3 hours, too. The first swim session of the summer! And I found out an interesting tidbit: her boyfriend Frankfurt is considering doing the Goofy Challenge which would be legit awesome! He needs some virtual encouragement! Do it Frankfurt! DO IT!!!

Also, I watched Star Trek: Into Darkness 3 times in the past week. Just thought you should know.

What did you do for Father's Day?

Have you ever participated in Habitat for Humanity?

Tell Frankfurt he should do the Goofy Challenge!

Week in Review

So, apparently I don't do anything on Sundays because this post is late yet again. Not as bad as last week though! Let's embrace that silver lining, shall we?

Last week? I was pretty okay, I guess.

Sunday - Rest day

Monday - Rest day

Tuesday - 2 miles treadmill w/Samantha (fastest mile ever!)

Wednesday - Rest day

Thursday - 1 mile treadmill w/Samantha

Friday - 1 mile treadmill, .5 mile elliptical and 1.5 miles bike w/Samantha

Saturday - Rest day

Total mileage - 4 miles

Meh. Not super awesome. But I went out and did stuff so that's good.

As you almost definitely already know, the Star Wars Half Marathon weekend sold out today and the Rebel Challenge sold out in 26 minutes! I'm really glad I got in there early. Also, I've changed my outfits for the races. I know I said I was going to be a rancor but the logistics of that would be insane. So here goes: for the 5k I shall be R2D2; for the 10k I shall be Princess Leia; and for the Half I shall be Han Solo. Bam! Decided!

I've also been working on ideas for my costumes for all of my races. For Wine and Dine, I'm torn. I was thinking a holiday theme. But then I feel like for my first half I should channel my spirit animal: Donald Duck. Yeah? Yeah? Maybe?

Are you running Star Wars?

Should I be Donald Duck for Wine and Dine?

Week in Review

Happy Hump Day!

I usually do this on Sunday but I was lazy on Sunday and didn't do anything except nap. So here it is, my week in review for the last week in May.

Sunday - Rest Day

Monday - 3 miles treadmill w/Samantha plus arms, legs and abs

Tuesday - 30 minute circuit plus 1 mile treadmill w/Samantha

Wednesday - Rest Day

Thursday - 1 mile outside with Shelila

Friday - Rest Day

Saturday - Rest Day

Total Mileage - 5 miles

Not so great mileage wise and then Samantha went on a cruise so I slacked off at the end of the week since I didn't have my gym buddy.

I've hit 5 weeks so far running 3 times per week so I've almost earned a new GPS watch!

Also, runDisney announced the highly anticipated Star Wars Weekend at Disneyland! I wasn't planning on doing it but it's the week before my birthday AND it's Star Wars themed so I decided I had to do it. It's fate! Or just the Force working in mysterious ways. My brother told me I should dress up as a rancor and chase people during the race which I think is an awesome idea. Just have to figure it out now. I just registered since I get early registration because of being an Annual Passholder and it was not so great for my money situation but it's going to be my birthday present to myself. At least that's how I'm justifying it to myself. And I'll be saving up pretty hardcore to afford everything while I'm there. So it's ok. I have a plan.

In other news, I ran my fastest mile ever yesterday! And I really needed it. I was starting to get discouraged about my weight and my running but that mile helped my confidence immensely. So hooray!

How did your workouts go last week (and this week so far)?

Are you registering for the Star Wars Half Marathon? Am I going to be chasing you through Disneyland as a rancor?

Week in Review

Not to brag or anything, but I am awesome! I rocked this week like no other week before it!

Sunday: Walked Epcot with Pattserella for our Friendaversary

Monday: 2 mile treadmill run with Samantha + 10 minutes elliptical

Tuesday: 2 miles treadmill run with Samantha

Wednesday: Rest Day

Thursday: 1 mile treadmill run with Samantha + 30 minute circuit

Friday: 2 mile treadmill run with Samantha + legs and arms machines

Total Miles: 7 miles

Run Fund Total: $52

Ok, so not only did I run 4 days this week, I also cross trained! Not even one of my goals last week. Over achiever, me.

So goals from last week were:

1. Run 3 times - Done and then some! Ran four times this week, woohoo!

2. Run solo - I meant to... I really did. Samantha was getting her hair done on Wednesday so wasn't going to go to the gym so I was going to go on my own then but I decided I needed a rest day.

And next week I plan to continue to rock it!

1. Run 3 times - 4 weeks down, 2 to go until I get to buy myself something expensive and beautiful! I'm debating between the Garmin Forerunner 220 and the Nike+ GPS Watch.

2. Run outside - It's Florida! I know it's hot! But running outside on the pavement is important. I don't want to become too dependent on the treadmill. Races are run outside on the pavement so I need to get used to both.

It's going to be a great week! I can feel it!

How did your workouts go this week?

Motivation Monday

Happy Monday! I did a LOT of pining on Pinterest and I found this gem to motivate myself:

If the Rhino can hit the treadmill to become a magical Unicorn then I can hit the treadmill to become a magical Sarah.

Also, I have been dangling a carrot in front of my face for the last few weeks to get in the habit of running: Expensive things! I want the Garmin Forerunner 220. I WANT IT NOW! But I’m making myself wait until I am running consistently, which for me is 3 times a week. And I have to do it for 6 weeks so hopefully it will become a non-negotiable at that point. That is why that has been one of my goals every week so far.

Speaking of which, here's an update on my goals from last week...

1. Run 3 times per week - nailed it! I didn't even half ass it this time. Woohoo!

2. Research cross training - nope. Didn't do it.

3. Join a gym - done! Samantha and I were going to do the Pi-K Group Run on Tuesday but it was hot so we went to her gym instead and I liked it so much I got a membership that very day!

And my goals for next week:

1. Continue to run 3 times/week - 3 weeks down, 3 weeks to go.

2. Run solo – I'm going to be running races alone for the most part so I won’t have Shelila or Samantha there to pace me so I need to get used to the solitude and regulate myself a little better.

And another motivating factor: my run fund has continued and my total is now $38. So yay!

Tuesday: 3 mile treadmill run with Samantha, 3.0 miles

Wednesday: Rest Day

Thursday: Morning run with Shelila, 1.02 miles

And The Rain, Rain, Rain Came Down, Down, Down...

As you all know probably know by now (because I won't stop talking about it), I went to Orlando last weekend to participate in the Expedition Everest Challenge and I had a blast (read my full recap here)!

And spent way too much money. Way, way, way, way, way, way, way, wayyyyyy too much money. But what else is new, right?

After I went to the expo on Friday, I headed over to Epcot to do a little shopping. Pattserella’s parent’s 30th wedding anniversary was coming up and she wanted to get them a present. For their 20th she got them a Cinderella and Prince Charming figurine so she wanted to stick with the Disney theme.

Coach Bob and Mama G's 20th Anniversary Figurine
Since I was headed down anyway, I offered to pick something up for her. So the decision came down to these three items.

Mickey and Minnie Bride and Groom

Beauty and the Beast

Bobble Head Mickey and Minnie

It was the showdown of all showdowns! No one was safe! But she picked the last one cause they kiss and they’re bobble heads.

But while Pattserella was deciding, I decided to head into the World Showcase, just to wander.

That’s a lie. I wanted to get the cinnamon glazed almonds that I found at Magic Kingdom and I heard a rumor that they lurked in Epcot as well. One slight problem though: rainy days are back again in Florida. And I left my umbrella in my car. I sucked it up for a while. For a long time it wasn’t really raining enough to even justify using an umbrella. But then I came to Morocco. And I genuinely needed some cover from the rain. So I bought a plastic monstrosity, also known as: a poncho.

Now, the last time I wore a poncho was about 40 years ago. I know that’s not actually possible since I’m only 24 but whatever. I have a gift for hyperbole. Seriously though, the last time I wore a poncho must have been when we went to Disney when I was about 3 or 4, a trip that I do not remember at all except that it rained and the water got in my shoes and made my socks wet and then my feet got all wrinkly and they hurt. It was magical, I’m sure.

But, since I hadn’t used a poncho in 40 years I had forgotten how a poncho worked. Why doesn’t it have arm holes? I don’t understand! But I put that college degree to work and figured it out (It has clasps on the side. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure it out).

I continued to walk through the World Showcase occasionally stopping under an overhang to see if Pattserella had made a decision. Once she had decided on the bobble heads, I headed back to the store and picked them up along with an Ariel mug and a Sleeping Beauty ornament and by the time I left it was POURING! So much! I would have enjoyed it if my phone had been in a Ziploc bag where it couldn’t get wet. But it wasn’t, so I worried about my dear little phone. By the time I made it to the exit, my pants were soaked all the way though. I had to change in the car. Very uncomfortable. And really awkward if anyone had happened to walk by.

And the worst part? I didn’t even get the almonds! I was heartbroken. Forlorn, even.

But luck was on my side two days later! On Sunday, Lackey and I went to Downtown Disney to get some ice cream from Ghirardelli (we deserved it!) and we passed by a nut stand! And it didn’t just have almonds, it also had pecans and cashews. I didn’t get the cashews (which I kind of regret now) but I did get the pecans and they were pretty delicious. Next time I will buy up that cart!

Moral of the story? Fate (and Downtown Disney) is a wonderful thing!

When was the last time you used a poncho? Was it actually 40 years ago?

Motivation Monday

It's Monday! I'm actually posting this on time this week! Hooray!

Kicking it off here's my Pin of the Week:

It's true. And very applicable to my life. I had a tough time getting of my butt and out the door. So I'm going to try to take this to heart this week.

Checking in on my goals from last week, I had two. The first one I hit (sorta): run 3 times. I ran for real on Thursday and Saturday and I decided to count the part of Expedition Everest that happened after midnight. The second one was to begin cross training. This did not happen. I didn't even try. So good job, Sarah! One-ish out of two is not so bad. Ish.

Goals for this week then:

1. Continue running 3 times per week. I'm going to get it for real this time, no half-assing it with part of another run that began the day before. And I'm going to my group run on Tuesday, no excuses!

2. Look into cross training. I'm backing off on the actually starting cross training. I'm a research person, I like knowing what I'm getting in to, so I'll start with the research this week.

3. Join a gym. At our Mother's Day dinner on Saturday, Lackey said that she goes to the gym every day at lunch and runs which is a great idea! Normally during lunch I wander around the mall and buy things I don't need and this would solve that spending too much money thing and help me make running non-negotiable.

How did your goals go last week?

Week in Review

This week was kind of tedious. The excitement of Expedition Everest was behind me and I'm looking at a long summer without any races to look forward to. Just long training runs in the heat of the Florida summer. I've also been trying to find a 10k somewhere somewhat local so I can get a time for Wine and Dine but it's not going so well because it's Florida in summertime and no one wants to run a 10k in Florida in summertime.

So this week was a struggle. I had a hard time just getting myself out the door and my weekly activity shows it.

Sunday - Scavenger Hunt portion of Expedition Everest, about 2 miles. Also walked Downtown Disney with Lackey for about an hour.

Monday - Rest day

Tuesday - Rest day

Wednesday - Rest day

Thursday - 1 mile solo run

Friday - Unplanned rest day (I was planning on running but Pattserella made beer bread, what's a girl to do!?)

Saturday - 1 mile solo run

Total mileage: 4 miles

I'm counting the tail end of Expedition Everest as a Sunday run. I was also supposed to go to the Pi-K Group Run on Tuesday with Samantha but I went to visit my grandmother instead.

Saturday was actually a surprise run! It was on my schedule but since we celebrated mother's day that day I figured it would fall through the cracks. But I was sitting in my room at 8 pm and the inspiration struck. I probably would have gone farther but I was wearing new running pants that are a bit too slippery so they kept slipping down my butt and no one wants to see that so I just headed home. Next time I'll wear my normal pants. Lesson learned.

Would you pass up a run for beer bread? Cause it's delicious.

Expedition Everest Excitement In Pictures

As all of you know by now, I ran Expedition Everest last weekend with my sister in law, Lackey You can find the full recap over at Running at Disney.

READ IT! But, I wanted to share some pictures on here as well (along with my oh so witty commentary).

So here it goes.

Bus stop excitement!

On the bus excitement!

In the corral excitement!

Lackey cold and not so excited!

Race start excitement!

Excitement because I met my soul mate, Donald. I made Lackey stop so we could take a picture with him. I told him he was my favorite and he looked all embarrassed. Adorable.

And we met Mickey! Not my soul mate, but still awesome! And exciting!

Weird dragon thing behind Expedition Everest! Exciting!

I got my medal! So exciting!

And I added a medal to my display! Exciting!

Can you tell all the excitement there was? It was crazy excitement! I can't even deal with it anymore, I'm going to go pass out of excitement!

Have you ever been so excited you passed out? Or so dramatic that people think you're being serious about passing out due to excitement?

Motivation Monday (On A Tuesday)

It always bodes well when a post that should have come out on Monday actually comes out on Tuesday. That’s motivational, yeah?

So this is motivation time. Where I work on motivation. To motivate myself to run. Yeah.

Pinterest is always good for things like that. So I have a board just for running. And this is my Pin of the Week.

True story, right?

And I have found something to trick myself into running regularly: A Run Fund!

Every time I run I keep track of the mileage and I pay myself accordingly. So for every mile I run, I pay myself $2 and by the time I get to a big race – say, Wine and Dine for instance – I will have a good chunk of money to spend at the expo, guilt free. I’ll still buy stuff if I don’t have enough in my run fund but I’ll feel guilty about it and that’s no way to live, right? I have a few dollars saved up so far. Just from last week I’ve got $14. When my mileage starts to increase when I start training for Wine and Dine, I’ll be rich! And $2 is a small enough amount that I won’t even notice that my regular spending money is less than it normally is.

And I have set a few goals for myself this week as well.

1. 3 runs a week. I have made a deal with myself that I will run at least 1 mile 3 times per week. 1 week in and so far so good. I’m trying to keep it up for 6 weeks and then buy myself something awesome.

2. Start cross training. Running is great but it’s probably smart to try some other stuff as well. My brother has invited me to work out with him and his friends at his storage unit so I can do that or I might try out a DVD or maybe join a gym. We shall see I suppose.

So that is my Motivation Monday Tuesday. Next week it’ll be on Monday, I promise.

What do you do to cross train? Any suggestions for me?

Week In Review

Ok so I meant to do this yesterday but I was sleepy. So I slept. Cause that’s what you’re supposed to do when you’re sleepy.

I just got back from my weekend in Orlando for the Expedition Everest Challenge which was AWESOME! Definitely do it if you get the chance. My full recap will be coming up on Running at Disney in the next few days and I’m really excited to share it with everyone.

So far as my weekly activity goes, here it is:

Sunday – Rest day (laundry day)
Monday – 30 minute solo run, 1+ miles, 1:4 intervals
Tuesday – supposed to be the Pi-K group run but it rained :/
Wednesday – Rest Day
Thursday – 30 minute run with Shelila, 1+ miles, 1:4 intervals
Friday – Walked around Epcot (in the rain)
Saturday – Expedition Everest Challenge, 3.1 miles plus scavenger hunt, about 5 miles total
Total mileage: 7+ miles

Mileage is pretty decent (for me at least), but I plan on increasing it steadily over the next few weeks.

Next up is Motivation Monday which will come on a Tuesday this week cause that’s how I roll.

How did your workouts go this week?

Group Run Recap

So you know how we talked about motivation? And I was talking about group runs?

Well I did it! At least the once.

Last Tuesday I went to my first group run with my friend Samantha. It was a Pi-K. 3.14 miles. Pi, get it? I thought it was funny. And I thought at least I would be a good excuse to eat some pie afterwards. That's sound logic right?

When we first got there we kept to ourselves. Not because people were not welcoming but because we didn't want to intrude on anyone else’s conversation. I’m sure if we had walked up to people and introduced ourselves they would have been more than happy to talk to us.

The girl who ran the thing was really nice; she gave us tickets for free booze (hooray!) and explained how the whole thing worked. Basically, follow the signs, have fun, be safe, end up back here. Pretty simple.
We started with a lap around the parking lot and continued on through an office area (that includes my own office) along with some fancy pants apartments and some shops. And a movie theatre. Can’t forget the movie theatre.

Now despite the assurances of the guy at the shop that told me about this group, I was the slowest person in the group aside from the woman with a stroller and the lady walking with her dog. So I was really happy to have Samantha with me. She was willing to slow down a little bit for me so I could keep up with her. She also kept me from giving up. Around the 1 mile mark I was like “What the fudge man? It’s only been a mile?” I wanted to turn back but she made me keep going. I felt bad after a while because she clearly wanted to (and was able to) go a bit faster than me but I just couldn’t do it on this particular day.

Part of it was I felt a little out of control. We were just deciding as we went when to run and when to walk. Ok, run to that sign. Ok, let’s walk. Ok, now let’s run to that tree! Ok, now let’s walk again. When I’m going by landmarks, I tend to sprint to get it over with which is not good endurance wise. I was also having trouble catching my breath and I think my heart was beating a little bit fast. And my former blister sites started to get a little hot. But we made it back which is all that matters at this point. Even if we were second to last to finish. (Baby lady and Dog lady walked so they were technically last.)

When we got back, there were presents! Booze, a free t-shirt and a free Galloway book! Score! A local nutrition shop was also there giving out some protein shakes. Also awesome. It was a very festive atmosphere but we were both ready to go. Samantha had to head to her second job and I was ready to go home.

Will I do it again? Absolutely. But I’ll need some rules.

1. Do intervals. – I’ve been doing 1 minutes running: 4 minutes walking the past week which has turned out pretty well and has definitely helped with the endurance factor. It will also help me feel a little more in control.

2. Talk to people – I’m not very social by nature so it’s always a bit of a crazy impulse when I introduce myself to a stranger at an event. Hopefully, if I introduce myself in this group it will entice me to show up almost all the time. Having Samantha there really helps but having a backup buddy wouldn’t hurt.

So that’s something to look forward to occasionally. Maybe every other week? Or maybe every week. I don’t know yet. I’m winging it right now.

Expedition Everest is on Saturday. And it’s supposed to rain. So that’ll be fun, right? I keep checking the weather obsessively hoping the forecast has changed. Cross your fingers for me?

Have you ever participated in a group run? Were you the last to finish (commiserate with me!)?

Evil, Thy Name Is Bed!

I have been dealing with a motivation problem.

I feel awesome during the day, ready to run once I get home from work and then I get home. And I see: My Bed. My best friend/worst enemy. Giver of rest and taker of time.

Hello Pillows. Hello Blankets. Hello Mattress.

It's a problem.

But the thing about me is, I'm a problem solver. In theory.

So here are the solutions that I have come up with/am putting into practice.

1. Get up in the morning to run. - This eliminates my get home from work collapse into bed problem. But a new problem arises: my alarm goes off and I want to keep on sleeping. Which can then be fixed by solution number 2...

2. Get a running buddy. - AKA Shelila, one of my BFFs from elementary/middle school. She recently moved in with my other BFF Pattserella who lives down the street. Now that she lives close by, it's pretty easy to arrange to get up just a little bit earlier once or twice a week to go for a quick 30 minute run. We've already done it once, and I found it really helped. She kept me paced pretty well too which is great cause I tend to sprint straight out and then can't keep it up. But at some point, Shelila might want to sleep in so that brings me to solution number 3...

3. Join a running group. - I was a bit hesitant about this one. I was (and still am) concerned about my pace. I know I'm not very fast, in fact I'm pretty darn slow. I don't want to slow anyone down and I certainly don't want to be the slowest person there. So I went into one of the local running stores and talked to them abut what groups they had set up and if they were appropriate for beginners. The guy I talked to anticipated my concerns and guaranteed me I would not be the slowest one. He also said that he was a pacer for a Galloway group and that they practice that during some of the group runs which really helped me feel confident about wanting to try the group out. Plus, it's right by my work and starts 30 minutes after my shift ends so it must be fate, right?

So that is my plan. Get up early to run, both solo and with Shelila, and start going to a running group where I will hopefully make more running buddies!

Also, less than 2 weeks until Expedition Everest! I'm going to be running as a team with my sister-in-law (I'll be dressed as Anna and she'll be dressed as Elsa) and I'll be doing a recap for another blog so stay tuned!

How do you stay motivated?

The Worst (But Most Important) Race Of My Life

This was my first big race. Triple the distance of my previous race.

And I was not feeling it. At. All.

If you don't know, the Gate River Run is a 15k race that runs thru and around downtown Jacksonville and over the St Johns River twice. It starts at Everbank Field downtown and then goes to the south side of the river and through the residential areas and then back to Everbank field. Now the first time it goes over the river isn't that bad. The Main Street Bridge is a drawbridge and fairly short distance wise so not so bad.

See? Not so bad. At least when you're actually running it.

It's when you get to the other bridge that the problem comes up. The Hart Bridge aka The Green Monster.

It's a terror! I drove over it for the first time the day before the race to pick up my race packet. And gravity does not want you to get up the bridge in a car so how the hell was I supposed to do it with just my poor little legs?!

Thus began my freakout. Friday: go to work, talk to a few of my friends and complain about not getting enough mileage in and then go to the expo. Cross the bridge and promptly freak out.

So that was my mindset going into the race on Saturday. Not enough training and then OH MY GOD THE BRIDGE!

Also, I stayed up too late the night before and I woke up with tummy problems.

Oh, and I took the wrong turn on the way downtown.

Freaking out.

I searched for my friend Frankfurt (who is a super speed demon btw, bib number 277, finished in 57 mins. He could have run a marathon in time it took me to finish this 15k) but couldn't find him so I headed to my corral and met up with my friend Samantha.

We didn't plan to run together but we hung out before the start. Once the gun went off we started "running". And by running I mean shuffling around trying to get to open space so we could start running. We didn't plan on running together so once we got out in the open we took off in different directions. I ran for a few minutes and then my tummy started acting up so I settled in to walk the whole thing.

Mile one runs along the front street (I don't know its name) on the way to the Main Street Bridge. After the first mile I lost track of what was where.

I know the 5k split was right on the river because I started tearing up a little bit then. How was it only 5k?

But I pulled myself together and kept going..

Through a few water stops. The volunteers could tell that I was questioning every life choice I had ever made and they were cheering me on accordingly. Which made me tear up. Thank you nice strangers!

Around mile 5 someone handed me a beer. I took it because I thought it was water but I drank it anyway. Don't judge me, I'm an adult!

10k, I'm still feeling bad but now I am developing blisters as well.

Out onto Atlantic Boulevard around mile 7 and on to the ramp for the Green Monster. Hit mile 8 towards the beginning of the bridge, whhhyyyyyyyyyy? Why is it still so far!? I had to take it really slow through this part because of the blisters. Horrible, horrible blisters. And as much of a beast as that bridge is, at least it changes things up. I'm pretty sure if my feet hadn't been so bad I might have even enjoyed it a little bit. But alas, it was not to be.

Once the bridge was over it was still so far! Every step was miserable. Even after crossing the 9 mile marker I was still ready to cry. 0.3 miles is far when you're in so much pain. I crossed the finish line 20 minutes later than I was projected to (stupid blisters!) and got my medal. I didn't feel very victorious this time.

I was definitely not in the mood to take a finish line photo so this will have to suffice.

Despite the miserable "race" I just had, the most miserable part was yet to come.

The trek to my car.

When I parked in the morning I thought it wasn't that far.

But I was wrong. Very wrong.

It was very far. Or at least felt very far. True story: once I could actually see my car is when I started crying. It  felt very far away. It felt farther that the race I had just finished. I think I was somewhat delusional at this point because it was literally about 12 feet away.

And then I spent the next two days recovering.

I struggled every step of this race. I started crying several times and thought about quitting every 10 minutes. But it was necessary. I've always been a planner but I very rarely follow through on my plans. So, on some level, I knew that I would not be prepared for this race. But I didn't think I would be this unprepared. It was a wake up call. I need to train more consistently, I need to respect the mileage and I need to stop freaking out.

I wallowed in self pity for a couple of hours and then turned it around. Miserable experience? What can I change next time to make it not so miserable? And as my mother said, most people see the Hart Bridge and don't even try so at least I have that. I worked through my fear of the bridge and my tummy issues and I finished. I may have finished towards the back but I crossed the finish line and got my medal. And I learned stuff too. So maybe my miserable day was not so miserable after all.

And now Cinderella has a buddy. So that's something.

What was your worst race? How did you learn from it?

Medal and Bib Display

Ok, so I may be getting ahead of myself here but I decided to create a medal and bib display for all my bling and whatnot.

I saw a few different things online that I liked but nothing I was willing to pay $50 for. So I stole some tools from my dad and spent a few hours on a Saturday putting it all together.

I got a 12in x 24in piece of wood at Lowes along with a bunch of 1 inch shoulder hooks. If you do it yourself you may want to go with ones that are a little bit shorter because they might be a little cheaper. The 1 inch hooks were over a dollar a piece which gets a little bit pricey.

I spent about an hour or so measuring out everything to make sure I drilled in the right place and everything would fit.

Then I sanded it, drilled the holes and painted it. And put back the tools.

So far as the letters go, I tried a few different things.  The plan was to print it onto t-shirt transfer paper and transfer it onto the wood which didn't work because I'm an idiot and didn't peel off the back first. I think the fact that the wood was painted had something to do with it as well. But mostly I'm kind of an idiot. I also had some letters already cut that I could have used but they were a bit too big. So my only other option was to cut out around the letters which I hadn't wanted to do originally because I thought it would look too messy. And it does a little bit but I actually like it a lot.

As you can see, there are 17 hooks for medals, a place to hang my race bibs and a foam thing at the top. I pretty much completely copied stuff I saw online except for that foam thing. I bought the Royal Family 5k pin and didn't know what to do with it so here's my solution: I cut a piece of black foam about 2 inches wide and glued it to the top. I also had a 2014 pin that I decided to add to keep Cinderella company.

And then I put mod podge EVERYWHERE! Not really, just the wood parts.

Then I hung it on the wall which was way more complicated that it should have been for someone with a college degree. It is a little bit heavy so I may have to add another hook on the back to distribute the weight a little better so it doesn't rip the wall out. But I think it looks pretty cool!

See my lonely little medal? It will have a buddy come Saturday! The Gate River Run is rapidly approaching and I am pretty psyched. More on that later though.

How do you display your race medals (or other achievements)?

One Step Closer...

So I did it.

Signed up for my first half marathon.

Disney's Wine and Dine Half Marathon, check it out!

So come November 8th, I will have reached my goal!

And with the new runDisney race a week later I will have the Coast to Coast medal as well!

Not gonna lie, when I first heard about the Avengers Half, I was like, "Yeah that sounds awesome but I don't think I'm going to do it."

But the more I thought about it, the more my thoughts went towards, "Hell yeah, I'm totes gonna do it!"

Yes, I say totes, deal with it.

I've even calculated out all of my time off I get for work this year and it works out.

Also good news: I think I've convinced Pattserella and Shelila to run the Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5k with me during Wine and Dine weekend so hooray!

I have been thinking even further ahead (I like planning things in case you haven't noticed) and I'm trying to decide if I should participate in Marathon Weekend, just run the 5k, 10k and half marathon to train for the Glass Slipper Challenge next year. They were the same courses for both weekends this year so I'm not sure if I want to run the same route twice in two months. But on the other hand, there's BLING! I love bling! I still have some time to think. But if I do both then I'll have run 4 half marathons in 4 months and that is a feather in my cap that I would quite like to have.

But before I can have that feather, I need to train! I did absolutely nothing this week which does not bode well for me. I'm doing the Gate River Run in two weeks with is 15k and goes over 2 rather long bridges. Time to buckle down!

What do you think? Should I register for the Marathon weekend races?

Cinderella Royal Family 5k Recap

I just ran my first race. EVER!

The Cinderella Royal Family 5k.

At 6:15 in the morning.

Now as someone who normally has to be dragged out of bed at 8 am and drink about 6 cups of coffee before I'm fully awake this was a super freaky experience. But I did it! And not a drop of caffeine either. So proud of myself.

So, 3: 30 rolls around and my alarm went off. I headed to the bus stop in front of the hotel (Pop Century in case you were wondering) and boarded the bus with the other runners. It was a charter bus which was weird to me, not sure why. With 7000 runners participating in the 5k that morning and a full 25,000 doing the half marathon a few days later it's really the only thing that would make sense. But anyway...

The bus got to Epcot around 4:30, so we had some time to kill. Luckily, they had a DJ there keeping everyone's spirits up and eventually the time came to head to the corrals.

Corral D! I wasn't in the last corral! Hooray! Now I know it's a fun run but I really didn't want to be in the last corral. As it was the first person to finish the race finished before my corral even started! It was a little kid too, couldn't have been more than 10. And was wayyyyyyyyyyy ahead of anyone else too.

The course went around the parking lot and then through the world showcase before winding around Spaceship Earth before heading back out to the parking lot. We hit Mile 1 before we even got into the park.

As we went thru the world showcase you could get your picture taken with Mushu and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. There wee a few other character stops too but nothing that stood out to me as much. I didn't stop for any of them cause the lines were crazy long!

Around Mile 2 my right foot swelled up but as soon as I stopped power walking and started running it went away.  Which is when I decided I needed new shoes cause I'm fairly certain that's not supposed to happen.

I saw Spaceship Earth straight ahead and knew I was almost there!

After a quick circle around, the finish line was past a little curve back in the parking lot. Once it was in view I pretty much sprinted! Crossed the finish line, got my very first medal and headed to the bus!

And then sent this super awesome picture to everyone!

All in all, I learned quite a few things from my very first race.

1. Hydrate the day before! I was really thirsty when I got off the bus which is not a good sign. I was really happy when I saw they had tents set up with food and drinks. Which leads me to another point...

2. Bring the right equipment! I had a wrist band that held my ID and a debit card, both of which I considered not bringing until I got that little piece of magic fabric. Saved my day! Also, I carried my phone along with me in my hand which worked out well since I wanted to take pictures along the way but before the race I kinda wished I had something to hold it in. Of course, the best solution would probably have been to get running pants that had pockets.

3. Wear the right shoes! I have been running in Inov-8 shoes which are pretty minimalist, they have very little cushion. I bought them on the suggestion of my brother who used to run cross country and tends to know more about athletic stuff that I do.  And they had been doing fine but during the race I found that they weren't too great for long periods of time.  The fact that I was standing for a full two hours before I started didn't help but still. A few hours after the race I went to the running store at Downtown Disney and asked the sales guy for some better shoes and he set me up with some Brooks Adrenaline shoes which I've heard great things about.

4. Sit down before the race! As I mentioned, I was standing for abut 2 hours before the race. I did see some people sitting but I was like "No, I'll be ok." Nope. Gonna sit next time.

5. People are awesome! I was so inspired by the people around me. I talked to a girl who had broken her back in 2 places last year and was running her first race since.  I also saw a guy with a shirt that said he was celebrating his 80th birthday. And I know it's kind of their job, but there were so many cast members out and cheering us on. I must have high five a dozen strangers as I ran past. And there were also cast members who just stood back and looked bored out of their minds which makes those that were enthusiastic and encouraging all the better. The volunteers were great too. I just thought "If this is how they are for the 5k, it's going to be awesome for the people running the half marathon in a couple days!"

6. Actually run! I found out that I'm pretty speedy when I actually run. I was passing all sorts of people when I was running. But then I started walking and that's when my foot swelled up. I'm probably running too fast and not pacing myself properly which is why I'm walking so much of it. Something to work on.

Also, a side note: don't wear flip flops the day before the race. I was walking to the restaurant at my hotel and stepped on some twigs and ended up getting a splinter in my foot which I couldn't get out. So cover all your bases and just wear shoes!

All in all I had a blast! runDisney really knows how to do things right, even for the 5k which was not the highlight of their weekend. And it definitely makes me excited to do the Glass Slipper challenge next year. And now that I have an Annual Pass I can register early! And this gets me excited for my future races. I have the Gate River Run on March 15th and then Expedition Everest with my sister in law on May 3rd. After that though, my schedule is empty until October which I think I need to fix. I do train better when I have a race on the calendar. And  then my first half marathon (which is my goal by the way, to run a half marathon before my 25th birthday in January) is going to be the Wine and Dine Half Marathon in November. I might even get my friends to join me for the 5k that morning, make it an event. Now I just have to convince them! Wish me luck!

How did you feel after your first race?
